Format

All courses required for this certificate are offered online.  

Certificate-seeking participants are able to register and pay for each class as their schedule allows.  Participants will receive an electronic certificate for each individual course they complete.  In addition, participants will receive a printed certificate for the full Nonprofit Management Certificate upon completion.  The Nonprofit Management Certificate allows all participants to receive their last class free!  Contact NMI staff at nmi@asu.edu to find out how!  Participants must be able to prove they have completed all required classes within a three-year period.  

Convenient Schedule

NMI Certificate Program courses are both intensive and flexible learning experiences. Online NMI courses take place asynchronously over two consecutive weeks and require five hours of study/participation per week.

Standalone Courses

The Nonprofit Management Institute provides certificates of completion for each NMI course. Again, simply register and pay for each class as your schedule allows.

Intent to Graduate Fee

You will need to officially indicate your intent to participate in the entire Certificate Program by declaring your intent to graduate and paying a one-time $50 Intent to Graduate fee. After beginning the program, please submit your Intent to Graduate Registration as early as possible by visiting the Intent to Graduate registration page. When you indicate your intent to earn a certificate and graduate, we are better able to track and support your progress toward completion.

After completion of the program, graduates are presented with a Professional Development Certificate in Nonprofit Management at a Spring Reception hosted by the ASU Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation.

Effective Financial Management Principles

In this course, participants will learn basic accounting principles and how to interpret and manage financial statements for a nonprofit organization. In addition, you will also learn the difference between accrual and cash basis accounting, and the importance of internal controls to protect the assets of your organization. Finally, you will learn how to analyze and use tax form 990, along with your organization’s annual report, as public relations tools.

Engaging and Developing Volunteers

Being A Volunteer Manager in the Midst of a Pandemic.

This 2-week course is led online by ASU Lodestar NMI Instructor, and Vice President of Community Impact at Valley of the Sun United Way, Jayson Matthews

For many organizations, volunteers are the backbone of outreach operations. In the COVID-19* world, volunteerism  has changed dramatically. Even before public health restrictions were placed in effect, recruiting, and retaining volunteers have been a constant resource management struggle for many nonprofit leaders.   

Volunteer programs require the same managerial effort as other organizational operation efforts. There are many factors to consider in ensuring that the experience is positive for both the volunteer and the organization. In this course, you are taught the basics of recruiting, managing, motivating, recognizing, and rewarding staff and volunteers to effectively utilize and retain their strengths and skills.

*Special attention will be placed within this upcoming season’s course to respond to the impact COVID-19 has had on this particular area of nonprofit resource development and management.
